The following excerpt is from People v. Davis, B292538 (Cal. App. 2020):
At trial, J.W. testified that some of the physical injuries she sustained at defendant's hands were unrelated to her sex work. However, she also testified defendant inflicted some of the injuries to ensure she continued to prostitute herself for him or because of his perceived dissatisfaction with her performance as a prostitute. J.W. also testified she was emotionally manipulated and psychologically abused by defendant for the same reasons, treating her well one minute and then poorly the next. In addition, there was evidence defendant confined J.W. in the apartment they shared when she did not bring back money from prostitution and when she mentioned she might cease working as a prostitute. This testimony alone is substantial evidence supporting the jury's finding (Evid. Code, 411; People v.
