What is the effect of a "good faith" settlement that reduces a plaintiff's claim against a defendant who is not liable for the same tort?

California, United States of America

The following excerpt is from Lewis v. RDM Mgmt., B280728, B287407 (Cal. App. 2020):

Under section 877, subdivision (a), a settlement "given in good faith before verdict or judgment to one or more of a number of tortfeasors claimed to be liable for the same tort" reduces plaintiff's claims against the nonsettling defendants "in the amount stipulated by the release, the dismissal or the covenant, or in the amount of the consideration paid for it, whichever is the greater." However, under Civil Code section 1431.2, subdivision (a), a settling defendant is only entitled to an offset for economic damages.23 (Rashidi v. Moser (2014) 60 Cal.4th 718, 722
