What is the cumulative prejudicial effect of a series of errors in the record of a defendant's trial?

California, United States of America

The following excerpt is from People v. Smith, D048913 (Cal. App. 6/10/2008), D048913 (Cal. App. 2008):

Smith contends that the cumulative prejudicial effect of the errors denied him a fair trial and mandates appellate reversal of his murder and attempted murder convictions. However, although a criminal defendant is entitled to a fair trial, this does not guarantee him a perfect one. (People v. Box (2000) 23 Cal.4th 1153, 1214.) We have examined each contention of error and determined that, in the one instance where error admittedly occurred, it was nonprejudicial. Accordingly, reversal is not required.
