Prior to custodial interrogation, a defendant must be warned of his or her Miranda rights. Unless a defendant is properly advised of these rights and voluntarily, knowingly, and intelligently waives them, statements made during custodial interrogation are inadmissible in a criminal trial to prove guilt.
