A doctor must treat his or her patient according to the standard of skill expected of a health care practitioner in the same field and in the same size of community. Specialists are required to engage in an honest and intelligent exercise of judgment: Wilson v. Swanson (1956), 1956 CanLII 1 (SCC), S.C.R. 804. While the standard of professional competence required of a specialist is high, the law makes allowances for errors of judgment.
