In what circumstances will the wife be able to divide the assets of the husband's future income stream upon divorce?

Alberta, Canada

The following excerpt is from Campbell v. Campbell, 2007 ABQB 781 (CanLII):

As was the case in Wooldrige v. Wooldrige 1999 ABCA 124, [1999] A.J. No. 433 at para 26: “... the single largest asset the parties had when this marriage ended was the husband’s future income stream. In circumstances of this kind, after more than 20 years of economic interdependence, one spouse should not be permitted to extricate him or herself from their family obligations, leaving the other spouse in a significantly financially impaired position.” In that case, the wife, as here, found herself in dire economic circumstances. There was little capital to divide upon divorce.
