What is the difference between first degree murder and manslaughter?

New Brunswick, Canada

The following excerpt is from R v. Dennis James Oland, 2016 NBQB 43 (CanLII):

Our Court of Appeal in R v. Nash explains the relevance of this inquiry I have made: ...There is said to be a continuum between first degree murder and manslaughter when it comes to the extent to which the murder was the product of an informed decision to take the life of another. ... (At para. 49)

In my opinion, this case falls toward the lower end of that spectrum referred to in R v. Nash, which tends to mitigate the parole ineligibility period that is to be imposed. I also find support for this view in the recommendation of the jury to which I will refer in a moment.
