What is the quantum of sentence for possession of heroin for the purposes of trafficking?

Ontario, Canada

The following excerpt is from R. v. Kelsy, 2008 CanLII 50804 (ON SC):

In terms of the quantum of sentence for possession of heroin for the purposes of trafficking, it must be underscored that the courts generally take a very stern view of all activities surrounding this drug. Heroin is a dangerous drug with devastating consequences for those who are addicted to it. Many courts have said that sentences for those involved in the commerce of heroin must emphasize the principles of general deterrence and denunciation: see Regina v. Pearce, [2007] O.J. No. 1597 (S.C.J.), at para. 27, Regina v. Pimentel, [2004] O.J. No. 5780 (S.C.J.). Still, there is a wide range of sentence for offences related to the trafficking of heroin: see, for example, Regina v. Sagoe, supra, in which a sentence of six months was imposed on an offender who was indirectly involved in the sale of 200 grams of heroin to an undercover officer, being wilfully blind as to the nature of the substance being heroin.
