The purpose of an award of non-pecuniary damages is to compensate for pain, suffering, loss of enjoyment of life and loss of amenities. The award should provide compensation which is fair and reasonable to both parties, fairness being measured against awards in comparable cases: Andrews v. Grand & Toy Alberta Ltd., 1978 CanLII 1 (SCC), [1978] 2 S.C.R. 229.
