Further, it is important to consider the underlying rationale for the principle against self-incrimination. As an over-arching tenet of our criminal justice system, this principle is primarily designed to prevent unreliable confessions and to counter possible abuses by the state: Regina v. White, supra at para. 43. The interest in achieving both these purposes is linked to the high value accorded by our society to individual privacy, personal autonomy, and dignity.
