Is there any difference between liability and damages?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Deo v Vancouver School District No. 39, 2018 BCSC 133 (CanLII):

This is a liability only trial. In a ruling indexed as Deo v. Vancouver School District No. 39, 2014 BCSC 2364, at para. 4, Sigurdson J. ordered that the issues of liability and damages be tried separately. Accordingly, the only issue before me in this trial is whether the defendant breached its obligations under the Occupiers Liability Act or was otherwise negligent, and I am not concerned with the quantum of any damages arising from the defendant’s alleged negligence.
