Is there any difference between a news release and a column about the Ironworkers?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Ironworkers Local 97 of The International Assn. of Bridge v. Campbell, 1997 CanLII 1379 (BC SC):

Both the news release and the column name the Ironworkers, but do not distinguish Local 97 from two other locals in this province. It is an essential element of the cause of action for defamation that the words complained of should be published "of the plaintiff". Where it is not named, the question is whether the words used would reasonably lead people to conclude that Local 97 was the one referred to. (See, Knupffer v. London Express [1944] A.C. 116 (H.L.) at p. 121).
