What is the test for interim custody of children?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Stewart v. Mathisen, 1998 CanLII 2655 (BC SC):

The master applied the test in Rinta v. Rinta (1980) 9 B.C.L.R. 287 and found, on the balance of convenience, the mother should remain living in the home with the children on an interim basis pending trial. Without saying the words, his order effectively granted interim custody of the children to the mother.
