What is the meaning of the terms “irreparable harm” and “balance of convenience”?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Palmer v. City of Burnaby, 2006 BCSC 165 (CanLII):

The words of Sharpe J., as cited at 51 of AGBC v. Wale are likewise apposite on this point: The terms “irreparable harm”, “status quo”, “balance of convenience”, do not have a precise meaning. They are more properly seen as guides which take colour and definition in the circumstances of each case. More importantly, they ought not to be seen as separate, watertight categories.
