What is the "needs and means" factor in determining a property settlement?

Yukon, Canada

The following excerpt is from E.A.G. v. D.L.G., 2010 YKSC 23 (CanLII):

This last principle comes from Johnson v. Johnson, [1993] B.C.J. No. 2140, which recognized that while all factors under s. 15.2(4) and (6) must be considered, the needs and means may be the most important factors from a practical point of view until the property settlement is determined (para. 16).
