In Regina v. C(M), P.B.C., March 7, 2000, an eight-month conditional sentence was imposed together with two hours of community work service and probation for one year. The defendant was a teacher and the complainant a 16-year-old student of his when the relationship began. The relationship was clearly instigated by the defendant but was consensual. It progressed from kissing and fondling to sexual intercourse, which occurred on three occasions after the student was 17. In all, the relationship lasted some seven or eight months. The defendant pled guilty at the earliest opportunity. He had no prior record. The sentencing judge believed that he was remorseful. He lost his 32-year career as a teacher. He had evidently a great deal of support via letters from various members of the community, and he suffered from extreme publicity about the case.
