What is the impact of a long-term absence from the profession on the employment market?

Ontario, Canada

The following excerpt is from Underwood v. Underwood, 1994 CanLII 7576 (ON SC):

Because of her length of time away from her profession, she had to take a college refresher course, and then start again at the bottom of the pay grid. Her claim for support is under the Divorce Act, and I am mindful of the economic consequences of her years of child care, and the economic disadvantages to her of the marriage breakdown, as discussed at length in Moge v. Moge (1992), 1992 CanLII 25 (SCC), 43 R.F.L. (3d) 345 (S.C.C.), as well as the issues of economic hardship and the promotion of economic self-sufficiency, in dealing with her claim.
