“The interference with liberty must be necessary for the carrying out of the particular police duty and it must be reasonable, having regard to the nature of the liberty interfered with and the importance of the public purpose served by the interference”: see Dedman v. The Queen, 1985 CanLII 41 (SCC), [1985] 2 S.C.R. 2 at p. 35.
