What is the standard of review in a custody matter?

Prince Edward Island, Canada

The following excerpt is from D.P. v. R.B., 2007 PESCAD 25 (CanLII):

As reinforced by Van de Perre v. Edwards, this is a standard of review which is applicable in all civil cases. The importance of properly applying this standard of review is to bring finality to proceedings and to avoid a duplication of proceedings. The underlying rationale for this relatively high level of deference is very important in cases involving the custody of children, particularly where the court is reviewing an interim order respecting custody and access.
