What is the impact of estrangement or alienation on a child's social and emotional development and adjustment?

Ontario, Canada

The following excerpt is from Children’s Aid Society of Toronto v. L.R., 2020 ONCJ 22 (CanLII):

In the case of Leelaratna v. Leelaratna[29] Justice Audet took judicial notice of the effects of a child’s estrangement or alienation from a parent. I adopt her comments wherein she states as follows: I take judicial notice of the significant short-term and long-term negative impacts that a child’s estrangement or alienation from one of his parents can have on that child’s social and emotional development and adjustment, physical, psychological and mental health, as well as on his overall well-being. These negative consequences have been documented in countless court decisions in the past, including in many of those cases cited above.
