Is a suspended sentence and probation for a minor role in a marihuana grow operation?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from R. v. Jones, 2001 BCPC 109 (CanLII):

Further, in the circumstances of this case, a suspended sentence and probation would not accord the appropriate weight to denunciation or general and specific deterrence. Significantly, there is nothing exceptional in the accused's personal circumstances or his motive for engaging in this criminal activity that would justify something less than a jail term. This is not a case similar to Regina v. Kereluk, supra where the accused was tempted into a minor role in a grow operation because of severe financial problems. The accused's circumstances are also different from those faced by the court in Regina v. Laflamme, supra, where the accused became involved in a marihuana grow operation because of serious financial problems but since the date of the charge had obtained a good job and had made inroads into his debt situation.
