What is the standard of review on appeal from a master's interlocutory order going to a matter vital to the final issue?

Ontario, Canada

The following excerpt is from Zeitoun v. Economical Insurance Group, 2008 CanLII 20996 (ON SCDC):

Leave to appeal was granted on grounds of the existence of conflicting lines of cases as to the standard of review on appeal from a master's interlocutory order going to a matter vital to the final issue of the case. The appellant's position is that the motions judge erred in law in declining to apply the standard of review in Carter v. Brooks, supra, and by applying instead the dicta in Hudon to hear the matter de novo.
