In what circumstances will a step-father be held liable for the support of the step-children?

Alberta, Canada

The following excerpt is from Alberta (Child Welfare Director) v. J.P.L., 1980 ABCA 342 (CanLII):

In Irwin v. Sholl (1897) 22 V.L.R. 640, an Australian case, the court stated that the word "step-father" meant the husband of the mother of a child, by a previous marriage of the mother. As a result of this interpretation, the husband in that case was not liable for the support of his wife's illegitimate children of whom he was not the natural father.
