What is the test for having joint custody of children?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Gullett v Gullett, 2001 BCSC 1207 (CanLII):

In Grove-White v. Grove-White (December 5, 1991), 5920/008354, Mr. Justice Meredith, while a judge of this court, said this: The respondent father moves for an order that he and the mother ‘share joint custody . . . with day to day care and control determined according to the children’s own wishes’. The children involved are A. age 12, C. age 8 and D. age 6. To so much as suggest that these children have their own way is preposterous. Amongst other things, it might well invite irresponsible and destructive inducements.
