What is the test for assuming jurisdiction in a civil matter?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Imagis Technologies Inc.v. Red Herring Communications, Inc., 2003 BCSC 366 (CanLII):

In context, the question to be determined is whether the court can lawfully assume jurisdiction. In that regard, a British Columbia court can assume jurisdiction when there is a “real and substantial connection between the court and the defendant or the subject matter of the litigation”: Furlan v. Shell Oil Co., 2000 BCCA 404.
