What is the test for determining whether there is a causal link between previous injuries and subsequent injuries?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Albert v. British Columbia (Workers' Compensation Appeal Tribunal), 2006 BCSC 838 (CanLII):

On the purported question of law, that is, whether or not the tribunals applied the correct legal principle in dealing with the evidence of injuries to determine whether or not there is a causal link or connection between previous injuries and subsequent complaints, counsel for the petitioner submits that the principles of Athey v. Leonati, supra, in relation to tort claims, are to be applied and that the causation is established where the defendant's negligence "materially contributed to the occurrence of the injury" and that a contributing factor is material if it falls outside the de minimis range.
