How is the calculation of loss of future earning capacity calculated?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Lomax v. Weins, 2003 BCSC 1354 (CanLII):

In Tom v. Truong, [2003] B.C.J. No. 1510, 2003 BCCA 387, the court commented on the method of calculating loss of future earning capacity in cases where a component of the claim includes the loss of future income. At ¶ 22, Low J.A. stated: … Although the authorities say that there should not be a purely mathematical approach, the facts in some cases lend themselves more readily to application of the mathematics of finance in the assessment process than do the facts in other cases. In a case like the present, the actuarial figures are of more than a little assistance in assessing damages though the exercise might appear to be one of calculation. They provide a framework for the assessment.
