Is there a general rule that there is no contribution between joint tortfeasors?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Peter v. Anchor Transit Ltd., 1979 CanLII 629 (BC CA):

The case of Merryweather v. Nixan (1799), 8 T.R. 186, 101 E.R. 1337, is cited for the proposition that, as a general rule, there is no contribution between joint tortfeasors. At common law, there are, however, numerous exceptions to this general rule. In British Columbia, the Contributory Negligence Act has abrogated the general rule.
