What is the common law position on interference with economic relations?

Ontario, Canada

The following excerpt is from Even v. El Al Israel Airlines Ltd., 2006 CanLII 5305 (ON SC):

Until relatively recently the general position of the common law has been that short of direct or indirect interference with an existing contract, interference with economic relations did not constitute a tort. This position has been based on the rationale that maintaining and facilitating free competition in the marketplace is of significant public interest. 671122 Ontario Limited v.
