Can an employer be held liable for negligence in administering a group life insurance plan?

Ontario, Canada

The following excerpt is from Perlett Estate v. Riverside Health Care Facilities Inc., 2003 CanLII 23264 (ON SC):

I find, in the case at bar, the negligence of the employer in administering the group life insurance plan is a matter within the normal scope of employer-employer relations, and is governed by the collective agreement. This court is bound by the precedent in Weber v. Ontario Hydro. For that reason, the case is dismissed.
