What is the test for a parent to have respect for their children?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from J.N.R. v. P.E.R., 2005 BCSC 458 (CanLII):

I agree with our Court of Appeal in Robinson v. Filyk that there should be no legal presumption at work and that the best interests of the children are paramount. But there must be demonstrated a willingness to cooperate in the planning of young children’s lives. There must be, at least on the surface, a manifestation of respect for the child’s other parent. Children will very quickly pick up the lack of respect one parent has for the other when no effort is made to protect the children from the conflicts the parents are experiencing between themselves.
