In R. v. Big M Drug Mart Limited, 1985 CanLII 69 (SCC), [1985] 1 S.C.R. 295; 58 N.R. 81; 60 A.R. 161; 18 C.C.C. (3d) 385; 18 D.L.R. (4th) 321; [1985] 3 W.W.R. 481, Dickson, J., discussed the approach to the definition of the Charter rights and freedoms. Referring to what had been said in Hunter v. Southam, supra, he stated that it is a purposive approach and that the meaning of a right or freedom was to be ascertained in the light of the interests it is meant to protect.
