What is the test for an expert witness in a high court case?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Matthews v. Gilbert, 2014 BCSC 1430 (CanLII):

I also refer to the decision of Mr. Justice Provenzano in M.T.H. General Contractors v. Hislop & Company, where at p. 69 of that decision, 5 B.C.L.R. 66, he writes: I mention these matters at this time because it was argued before me that this was a hard fought and difficult case. In my respectful opinion, all litigation is hard fought and difficult. That is the usual situation when matters are contested in court. In that sense, I agree with the submission of counsel. But if the submission was intended to carry the meaning that there was effort and skill required over and above the usual then, with respect, I must disagree.
