What is the range of damages for pain and suffering in a motor vehicle accident?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from O’Connell v. Yung, 2012 BCCA 57 (CanLII):

The amount of damages for pain and suffering is a question of fact. The award must be specific to the plaintiff and reasonable to both parties. Factors such as the age of the plaintiff, the nature of the injury, and the relative severity and duration of pain, disability, emotional suffering and loss of enjoyment of life should be considered: see [Boyd v. Harris, 2004 BCCA 146, 237 D.L.R. (4th) 193] at para. 42.
