What is the proper procedure for a summary trial application?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Xu v Farden, 2021 BCSC 1639 (CanLII):

The parties agree that, in a summary trial application, where a party seeks determination of an issue, as opposed to all issues in the action, a two-step approach is appropriate. The first step is to determine whether there should be severance of the issues and the second, to determine whether a summary trial is appropriate: Chun v. Smit, 2011 BCSC 412 at paras. 8–9.
