When considering the reapportionment of the family assets of a medical malpractice practice, does Brooke J. make a reference to the issue of spousal support?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Merali v. Merali, 2009 BCSC 1857 (CanLII):

When considering the reapportionment of the family assets, Brooke J. made the following comments that are also relevant to the issue of spousal support: […] the core issue is what is an equitable sharing of the economic consequences of the marriage or its breakdown? In Moge v. Moge [citation omitted] … L’Heureux-Dubé J. observed that the equitable sharing of those economic consequences can be achieved by child and spousal support, the division of assets, or a combination of both. […] During the marriage, the plaintiff contributed her not inconsiderable talents and energies to the defendant’s practice and, in so doing, gave up her own opportunity to pursue a career in science. As a family, however, they enjoyed a standard of living commensurate with the family income.
