Does a spouse have to compensate the other spouse where they have gone into a different role during the marriage?

Ontario, Canada

The following excerpt is from Harris v. Malekzadeh, 2022 ONSC 1826 (CanLII):

It is well settled law that a spouse will be required to compensate the other spouse where he or she has “forgone careers and missed opportunities” during the marriage: Bracklow v. Bracklow, 1999 CanLII 715 (SCC), [1999] 1 S.C.R. 420. That is, compensatory spousal support is necessary where one spouse suffered an economic loss due to the roles the parties assumed during the marriage so that the other spouse could receive an economic benefit.
