How is spousal support determined in a divorce?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Yang v. Zhang, 2017 BCSC 524 (CanLII):

Once entitlement to spousal support is established, the amount and duration of spousal support is determined by considering the factors in s. 15.2(4) of the Divorce Act. The Spousal Support Advisory Guidelines [SSAG] become relevant at this stage. They are a useful tool, but they are guidelines and not law: Bozak v. Bozak, 2008 BCSC 1458 at para. 37.
