What is the impact of incomplete, unreliable or missing opinion evidence on a trial judge's ability to determine the value of a property?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from P.J.L. v R.J.L., 2017 BCSC 1792 (CanLII):

The decision of Slavenova v. Ranguelov, 2015 BCSC 79, highlights the difficulties faced by the trial judge when the evidence of the value of real property is incomplete, unreliable or missing. As revealed in that case, the absence of reliable opinion evidence might necessitate further steps in the proceeding, such as a reference to the registrar, and thus prevent the just, speedy and inexpensive determination of the parties’ respective claims at trial, contrary to the objectives as stated in SCFR 13-3.
