In what circumstances will the court award custody of the children of a broken marriage to the mother?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from I.S. v. D.S., 2010 BCSC 306 (CanLII):

Similarly, in Goeson v. Goeson, [1994] B.C.J. No. 581 (S.C.), Blair J. awarded custody of the three children of the marriage to the mother, with liberal and reasonable access to the father, and while maintaining joint guardianship. The mother received custody because Blair J. was concerned with the inability of the father and his extended family to not speak ill of the mother when the children were with them.
