What is the test for a Rule 577.2 application?

Alberta, Canada

The following excerpt is from Randle v. Randle, 1999 ABQB 954 (CanLII):

The court in McDonald v. McDonald, supra held that a Rule 577.2 application is based on "need" or "necessity". The applicant must show that without interim costs he or she will not have sufficient resources to have the issues judicially determined. However, it is not required that the applicant divest him or herself of assets or apply for and be refused legal aid in order to prove need.
