What is the purpose of Rule 217 of the Rules of Civil Procedure?

Alberta, Canada

The following excerpt is from Pozo v. Mogge, 2002 ABQB 994 (CanLII):

In Naistus v. Huculak, supra at 146 also correctly described the purpose of Rule 217 generally as follows: In my respectful opinion the purpose of the rule is to assist the parties to the litigation to have full disclosure of the medical evidence bearing on the injuries suffered for which the legal remedy is sought. The obvious purpose is to enable each party to directly confront the matter that is in issue and to place before the court medical testimony, dealing with the issue. . . .
