What is the philosophy for pecuniary loss?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Tsougrianis v. Marrello, 1998 CanLII 5153 (BC SC):

In Milina v. Bartsch supra, McLachlin J. discussed the philosophy for pecuniary loss and some legal principles that must be applied. The fundamental governing precept is restitutio in integrum. The person injured is to be restored to the position s/he would have been in had the accident not occurred, insofar as this can be done with money.
