Is a father required to contribute towards an Individual Savings Account ( RESP) expense?

Manitoba, Canada

The following excerpt is from E.L.L. v. R.M.L., 2003 MBQB 138 (CanLII):

I also considered whether the RESP expense is necessary and reasonable. I adopt the comment related to an RESP in Gaetz v. Gaetz 2000 CanLII 5615 (NS FC), 11 R.F.L. (5th) 80 (N.S.S.C.) at paragraph 23 that “the RESP may be desirable but is not necessary.” I do not therefore require the father to contribute to the RESP.
