In his judgment the trial judge referred to the dictum of Lord Salmon in Director of Public Prosecutions v. Humphries, [1977] A.C. 1, at p. 47, which reads: "It is almost unheard of for those who have been convicted in spite of their lies to be prosecuted for perjury save in the most exceptional circumstances, and rightly so."
