What is the impact of having to be paid for hearing testimony and in the written judgment on the issues involving the children?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from R.A. v. W.A., 2016 BCSC 663 (CanLII):

Accepting that more time might have been spent hearing testimony and in the written judgment on the issues involving the children, I agree with Madam Justice Humphries’ comments from Hansen v. Mantei-Hansen, 2013 BCSC 1854 at paras. 12 to 16. She points out that parents bear their own costs in a custody battle usually based on the court's assessment of the positions taken rather than a party's genuine belief. In that regard, I note that the respondent's position at trial was reasonable in that he accepted he was not in a position to exercise 50% parenting time because of his living circumstances and his work schedule.
