What is the range of non-pecuniary damages in a motor vehicle accident?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Powell v Eagle Harbour Yacht Club, 2018 BCSC 537 (CanLII):

Non-pecuniary damages are intended to compensate a plaintiff for pain, suffering, loss of enjoyment of life, and amenities. The compensation awarded must be fair to both parties. While the awards made in other cases are helpful, they are only a rough guide to appropriate compensation. An appropriate award must be fashioned to take into account the particular circumstances and experiences of the plaintiff before the court. The factors to consider were outlined in Stapley v. Hejslet, 2006 BCCA 34 at para. 46, and have been expanded upon in subsequent cases.
