Is a husband's ability to pay his wife's support reasonable?

Ontario, Canada

The following excerpt is from Martin v. Martin, 2004 CanLII 48712 (ON SC):

Donald J. in Muir v. Muir, [1992] B.C.J. No. 851, (B.C.S.C.) was faced with an argument by a husband that his ability to pay support was not the issue because his wife possessed substantial assets and because the amount that he was paying to her for her support met her reasonable needs and expenses. The wife countered with an argument that, since separation, the husband had been able to accumulate substantial savings while she had gone into debt.
