What are the grounds for spousal support for a 58-year-old man who, as a result of a long-term relationship with the respondent, has assets that exceed that of the respondent?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from B.D.M. v. A.E.M., 2014 BCSC 453 (CanLII):

The claimant seeks spousal support. He relies on the compensatory grounds explained in Moge v. Moge, 1992 CanLII 25 (SCC), [1992] 3 S.C.R. 813, and submits that he is in need. I see no merit in the claimant’s claim for spousal support. His assets exceed those of the respondent. Although he is 58 years old, he is in good health and has the qualifications to pursue a career as a real estate appraiser. The claimant’s submissions in support of his claim for spousal support are based in large part on his allegation that the respondent has caused his financial predicament. There is no credible evidence to support this allegation.
