What is the standard of care and skill required of a medical professional?

Ontario, Canada

The following excerpt is from Soper v. Salvation Army Scarborough Grace Hospital, 2009 CanLII 3566 (ON SC):

Every medical practitioner must bring to his/her task a reasonable degree of skill and knowledge, and must exercise a reasonable degree of care. He/she is bound to exercise that degree of care and skill which could reasonably be expected of a normal, prudent practitioner of the same experience and standing, and if he/she holds him or herself out as a specialist, a higher degree of skill is required of that person than of one who does not profess to be so qualified by special training or ability. See: Neuzen v. Korn 1995 CanLII 72 (SCC), [1995] S.C.J. No 79 (S.C.C.) at para. 33.
